Fellowship Training Program
Northeast Urogynecology offers a three-year fellowship program in Female Pelvic Medicine
and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) to qualified board-eligible gynecologists and urologists.
The inaugural fellow commenced training in 1999.
The program is based on the guidelines and learning criteria adopted by the
American Board of Obstetrics and Gyecology (ABOG) and the American Board of Urology (ABU) in 2000.
Since the fellowship is based in a private practice with a strong emphasis on both basic science and clinical research,
the graduating fellow has a strong background in both private and academic medicine and will feel comfortable
practicing in either setting.
The successful applicant will assume increasing responsibility in all aspects of the practice of urogynecology
and reconstructive pelvic surgery during the fellowship. The fellowship is structured but is flexible enough to
accommodate the fellow's areas of special interest.
Typically, Year One sees the fellow in the animal laboratory three days a week, in surgery one day a week,
and in the office one day a week. During Year Two, the fellow spends one day a week in research
(either basic science or clinical), two days a week in surgery, and two days a week in the office.
In Year Three, the fellow's time is allocated among research, surgery, and office practice according to need and interest.
The fellow experiences the full range of surgical urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery.
Approximately 500 surgeries are performed each year under Dr. Lobel's supervision, including abdominal,
vaginal, and laparoscopic procedures.
In the office, the fellow assumes increasing responsibility for outpatient management.
Northeast Urogynecology offers a comprehensive array of nonsurgical options for patients,
including innovative research opportunities, and the fellow is integrated into every aspect of the practice.
Special emphasis is placed on cystoscopy, urodynamic training, and other office procedures.
The fellow will graduate from the program as a full-fledged urodynamicist.
The fellow will also receive training in the business aspects of urogynecology, from developing a
business plan to coding to reimbursement issues.
For more information or to receive an application, please contact Dr. Lobel.
